After 164 days of the Republican majority refusing to bring jobs legislation to the House floor and blocking Democratic proposals that do create jobs, it is clear the GOP has no interest in putting Americans back to work. Enough is enough. Yesterday, Democrats began a process to force the Republican leadership to bring a bill to the floor that will create jobs. Part of our Make It In America agenda, this measure could create one million jobs and would enhance our economic and national security—by making China play by the rules of fair trade and leveling the playing field for American workers.
Democratic leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday said they would try to force a vote on a China currency bill that House members overwhelmingly approved last year but that died in the Senate.
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said party members were circulating a “discharge petition” to force Republicans who control the chamber to bring the bill to pressure China to let its currency rise faster in value to the floor. That would require 218 signatures, she said.
“They (Republican leaders) won’t bring it to the floor, we are moving to discharge this legislation,” Pelosi said at a news conference announcing the petition drive…
Levin told reporters on Thursday that Republicans should allow a vote on the bill if they are interested in protecting American jobs.
House Democrats plan to try to use an arcane parliamentary procedure to try to force a floor vote on legislation that would take action on the alleged depressed value of the Chinese yuan.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) said that the party’s leadership planned to seek a vote on long-stalled legislation that would direct the Obama administration to apply tariffs to Chinese imports. The move would be in response to Beijing’s alleged policy of deliberately keeping the yuan artificially low…
“Currency is a jobs issue,” said Rep. Sander Levin (D., Mich.), the top Democrat on the House Ways & Means Committee. “When another country manipulates its currency, especially China; it hurts American jobs.”…
Democrats have twice tried to bring the measure forward this year using another parliamentary tactic, but were defeated by the Republican majority.
