Caucus Chairman Emanuel on the Tragic Year in Iraq

Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel issued the following statement after recent casualties made 2007 the deadliest year in Iraq for American troops:

“Nearly five years into the war, the news that more than 850 young men and women have been killed so far this year in Iraq is more than a grim statistic — it's an unfortunate reminder of the lack of progress by the Iraqi government and the Bush Administration in reaching political reconciliation. As the war in Iraq continues to claim the lives of brave Americans, President Bush and the Iraqi government ask us to be patient while they pursue the Bush plan for more of the same in Iraq. American troops have done everything we have asked them to do in Iraq, but our political leaders have not measured up to their sacrifice. Today's tragic milestone only further underscores the need for a new direction in Iraq.”
